Value Stream Mapping

Value stream mapping is a practical and powerful tool of the LEAN manufacturing process, and is used to identify waste in any business process—from manufacturing to administrative—allowing us to pinpoint opportunities for improved efficiencies in time and cost.
This tool involves actually mapping the steps of one of your current processes. This mapping process typically involves representatives from your organization and is conducted over an intense 3- to 5-day period.
The outcome is a written plan of action with responsibilities and timeframes clearly identified. Typically the required changes are rolled out over a 6- to 12-month period, with the focus on low-cost, quick benefit opportunities.
Here are some of the problem areas that a value stream map can identify.
- Overproduction
- Excessive waiting or delays
- Excessive transportation
- Unnecessary Processing
- Unnecessary inventory
- Excessive Motion
- Defects and rework
- Underutilization of people assets
- Confusion
